Hatpins to Hashtags – on the road to equality in Taunton

Our exciting touring project, celebrating 100 years since women got the vote, is coming to Taunton from October 30 to November 11th.

Hatpins to Hashtags, hosted by Taunton’s community arts centre – CICCIC – offers free workshops, events and a unique exhibition of inspiring, campaigning posters from the Women’s Liberation Movement (1970-2000). The Exhibition, “Politics and Protest” tells a vibrant story of women’s fight for equality.

"We’re excited to be coming to Taunton, to celebrate the history of ever growing gender equality” said Archive Trustee Sue Tate “and (thanks to funding from the Government Equalities Office) we have a great programme to inspire thought and action around today’s issues for women.”

Everyone is welcome to the exhibition opening on Tuesday 30th Oct at 6.30, with refreshments  on offer.  At the Digital Democracy Workshops on Sat 3rd and Tuesday 6th you can learn how to host your own website and experiment with working co-operatively.  On Tues 6th from 7.00pm you’re invited to “Taking on the Media”: hear about Somerset’s pioneering Just Women Magazine – published successfully by local women for a decade from 1987– and consider how best to use the media in the era of the hashtag.

Unison (the trade union with a regional office in Taunton) will lead a day of talks and workshops on Women and Work on Saturday 10th - while Feminist Futures will work with local schools and colleges to explore activism and what’s still to be achieved in the battle for gender equality.

The suffragettes used hatpins in self defence. And today women are using hashtags like #MeToo to do the same. What matters to you now?  Finally, in a fun afternoon for all the family on Sunday 11th you can get creative making badges, zines and posters of your own – children welcome.

For details of all events look under 'Locations" > "Taunton" and to register for Digital Democracy workshops here for Saturday 3rd  and here for Tuesday 6th

After Taunton Hatpins to Hashtags will travel to Bridport and Plymouth.                                 Catch it while it’s here!

Hatpins to Hashtags is funded by the Government Equalities Office.
