This interactive workshop aims to enrich learning of the topics and themes relating to women’s social and political history covered by the AQA and Edexcel A Level History specifications. The workshop will enable students to build on a historical and political understanding of the changing role and status of women in the 20th century through a creative, archival exploration of Women’s Suffrage and the Women’s Liberation Movement. 

Archival Research Skills

Drawing on a rich handling collection of archival materials, students will have the opportunity to practice the transferable skills required for historical investigation including critical thinking and archival research skills. 

Students will be challenged to critically interpret a variety of sources in relation to the 7 demands of the Women’s Liberation Movement, questioning to what extent these rights have been achieved and for whom. Through archival research, students will gain an understanding of the concept ‘the personal is political’ through learning about the key legislative changes impacting women’s rightsand the role of feminist pressure groups in exerting influence on democratic structures. 

Working collaboratively to build a rich timeline of diverse archive materials, students will be encouraged to connect historical contexts, reflecting on how the Women’s Liberation Movement, the Civil Rights movement and LGBT+ rights activism have intersected and impacted on 20th century history. 


  • Students will be invited to display their research in the Feminist Archive’s touring exhibition of posters Politics and Protest  
  • Write a blog on a related topic and publish it on the Hatpins to Hashtags project website. 
  • Excellent subject specific experience for those aspiring to Higher Education.
  • Enrich academic essays with original archival research

Ellie O'Connell

Ellie O’Connell is a feminist teacher, activist and Education Co-ordinator for the Hatpins to Hashtags project. In partnership with T.I.G.E.R. (Teaching Individuals Gender Equality and Respect), she is responsible for researching and planning the Hatpins to Hashtags workshop series as well as building connections with schools, colleges and youth groups. 

Ellie is a fully qualified Modern Languages teacher specialised in teaching the 16-19 age range and has worked with young people to explore intersectional feminisms in multicultural educational contexts.

Ellie is also studying an MA in Comparative Literatures and Cultures at the University of Bristol. She began the Translating Latin American Feminisms project which brings together translators of all levels, academics and activists to collectively research, translate and digitise the unexplored narratives of intersectional feminist activism within the archive.

She loves riot grrrl music, making things, cycling and gardening. She juggles all of this with long term health problems and would be very happy to discuss all things accessibility :)
